Deadline for REAL ID Compliance Extended to Oct. 1, 2021

The Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline to obtain a Real ID driver’s license or identification card by a year. The new deadline for when U.S. air travelers will be required to present the Real ID credential to board a domestic flight is Oct. 1, 2021.

Departments of Motor Vehicles across the nation have been forced to close or reduce services in recent weeks as a precaution to stop the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. Delaying the deadline a year also will give the federal government time to implement changes that could speed issuance of Real IDs.
