CMS Publishes Final Rule on Fire Safety Requirements

May 3, 2016

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a final rule today to update the fire protection guidelines for certain health care facilities, including Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE®), to improve protections for Medicare beneficiaries.

In addition to PACE, the new guidelines apply to hospitals, long-term care facilities, critical access hospitals, inpatient hospice facilities, religious non-medical health care institutions, ambulatory surgical centers, and intermediate care facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“Health care facilities can now be more home-like while ensuring that the most modern fire protection practices are in place,” said Kate Goodrich, MD, MHS, director of the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality at CMS, in making the announcement..
