On Lok House Named for Marie-Louise Ansak

August 28, 2018

More than 140 guests attended a ceremony on Aug. 9 to name On Lok House, in San Francisco, in honor of its founding executive director, Marie-Louise Ansak. The event, which honored Ansak’s vision, passion and commitment to seniors, was held in conjunction with her 90th birthday.

Ansak’s friends and family from all over the world, current and former On Lok staff and board members, and leaders who were instrumental in the formation of On Lok and PACE were on hand for the memorable event. Ansak orchestrated the development of On Lok from an idea to a day health center for older adults, then to a comprehensive, community-based long-term care program called PACE.

“This is truly a milestone in On Lok’s history,” said Grace Li, CEO of On Lok. “Over four decades ago Marie-Louise and Dr. William Gee co-founded On Lok on the principles that accessible health care, supportive services and housing were necessary for frail elderly to avoid unnecessary institutionalization. Today, we are honoring Marie-Louise’s vision by naming On Lok House in her honor.”

Built in 1980, On Lok House is a 54-unit building with Section 8 subsidized apartments. The co-located housing with an adult day health care center demonstrates that integrating housing and services is key to enabling seniors to continue living in the community. On Lok completed a $10 million renovation to upgrade the housing units of On Lok House and the co-located Powell PACE Center in 2017.

The naming ceremony was followed by a luncheon at China Live, where guests reminisced about the early years of On Lok, viewed historic photos, and celebrated Ansak’s contributions to the community and beyond.
