Statistical Information on the Growing Older Population

The older population – people age 65 and over – numbered 44.7 million in 2013, the latest year for available data. Older adults represented 14.1 percent of the U.S. population, about one in every seven Americans. By 2060 there will be approximately 98 million older people, more than twice the number in 2013. This group is expected to grow to be 21.7 percent of the population by 2040.

The Administration for Community Living highlights this information on the Administraion on Aging website that brings together a wide variety of statistical data about this growing population. Available on the website are a Profile of Older Americans, the AGing Integrated Database (AGID), Census Data & Population Estimates, the Projected Future Growth of the Older Population, and Key Indicators of Well-Being.
